About Nicholas Mackey

Nicholas Mackey is a writer and photographer whose lifelong passion for storytelling and visual exploration began in childhood when he received a camera as a gift. A Trinity College Dublin natural sciences graduate, his diverse career spans teaching, film directing, journalism, commerce and a stint as a diplomatic attaché.

A published author and Royal Photographic Society’s 2021 Documentary Photographer of the Year nominee, Nicholas has exhibited at the Royal Academy, London. He was Photography Writer for Art Etc. for 18 months until the sad demise of the publication in December 2024. His recent publication, An Irishman in Northern Mesopotamia, intricately weaves travelogue, history, ideas, poetry and captivating photography. He has been active in giving talks on his book in Ireland and England – the most recent being at the Irish Cultural Centre, Hammersmith, London.

He is now working on further projects such as adding music to his poetry in cooperation with a composer/musician and he has started on the writing of his new book – on this occasion, a novel with an Irish historical theme. And he’s also keeping a photo diary.
